What is hirudin?
Hirudin is a peptide substance first identified from leeches. In pharmacology research, it is a direct thrombin inhibitor. Natural hirudin is associated with leech-derived source material; it is not an ingredient extracted from green leaves or other plants. [1]
“Natural” describes a source concept. It is not a guarantee of safety, absorption, or efficacy. When reading product information, check the complete formulation, the physical label, and the precautions.
Similar names should not be treated as the same thing
The supplied materials mention natural hirudin, recombinant hirudin, leech powder, and freeze-dried leech powder. Similar terminology does not establish the same raw-material composition, purity, activity, or product specification.
- Natural hirudin
- Hirudin separated from a leech-related source. The relevant documentation is needed to determine its particular purity and activity.
- Recombinant hirudin
- Hirudin produced through recombinant biotechnology; its source and production method differ. [1]
- Leech powder / freeze-dried powder
- Different raw-material terms. The name alone does not establish an equivalent amount or purity of hirudin.
Pack weight is not the amount of one ingredient
For example, “60 capsules × 500 mg” is a pack format. It does not establish that every capsule contains 500 mg of pure hirudin. Activity units, the amount of a particular ingredient, and the weight of a whole capsule should be checked independently against the current label or batch documentation.
This terminology is organized from company-supplied ingredient-comparison material. It does not determine that one brand is more effective or safer than another.
Mechanism in research
Thrombin participates in blood coagulation, including the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin. Hirudin can bind directly to thrombin and inhibit its activity, which is why it has attracted attention in anticoagulation pharmacology research. [1]
Ingredient research and an oral product are not the same thing
Literature on hirudin and its derivatives includes experimental, pharmacological, and clinical-medicine research. The formulations, amounts, and routes of administration in that work may not be the same as a marketed oral product. Hirudin is a peptide, and the literature describes the difficulty of achieving an effective concentration by oral administration; medicine-related research often uses non-oral routes. [1]
Accordingly, a study involving hirudin does not establish the same outcome for Hirumax or Zhitongwang Natural Hirudin. Any effect of a finished product requires evidence concerning that product and its actual use. This site does not make that inference or claim.
Research patents, overseas permissions, company awards, and a finished product’s registration or advertising compliance in Hong Kong are separate matters and should not be treated as substitutes for one another.
Consider safety before use
Hirudin has anticoagulation pharmacology, and research literature discusses bleeding risk and limitations related to renal clearance. These considerations are a reminder not to assume that “natural” means risk-free. [1]
People using anticoagulants, antiplatelet medicines, or other medicines; people with bleeding or kidney concerns; people preparing for surgery; and people who are pregnant or breastfeeding should first speak to a doctor or pharmacist. Children and other people with special circumstances should not apply adult product information on their own.
Do not stop prescribed medicines or use a health product as a substitute for diagnosis or treatment. For acute chest pain, difficulty breathing, sudden neurological symptoms, or other serious symptoms, seek urgent medical help rather than waiting for a product to take effect.
